Winter is right around the corner and if you are anything like me…your skin is always in need of extra hydration help. Niki shares with us some skincare tips on how to combat flakey dry skin in the harsh winter months!

What changes should one make to their daily skincare routine as winter approaches to combat dry and dull skin?

For colder winder months when skin is more susceptible to dryness, opt for products that focus on barrier repair, especially products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, squalene and aloe.

Are there specific ingredients or products that are particularly beneficial for protecting the skin from harsh winter conditions?

Winter time is a great time to work on targeting skin issues like hyperpigmentation and sun damage, so don’t be afraid to use strong active ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid and Vitamin C. But, if you notice your skin is getting dry, apply your moisturizer before your active ingredients, or switch to using them every other day, instead of everyday. You will still see amazing results.

Or, if your skin feels TOO sensitized from the weather, you can switch your retinol/vitamin c and acid-based serums to lotion or cream moisturizers that have these ingredients.

Another easy fix for dry skin is switching to a gentle cleanser, specifically a cream based cleanser or one that is formulated for sensitive skin. I love using a moisturizer with at least SPF 30 in the winter months because of it’s hydrating and protective qualities.

How often should exfoliation be incorporated into a winter skincare routine, and what type of exfoliants are recommended?

Always be gentle with your skin. If you feel the need to exfoliate, once a week is sufficient and should be done with a gentle exfoliator that has jojoba beads, rather than apricot seed or gritty granules that don’t break down. One of my favorite tips to share with my clients is to mix a tiny bit of sugar into their gentle cleanser once a week to slough off dead, dry skin so your other products work better (on that fresh, clean skin!)

Are there any particular moisturizing techniques or ingredients that are essential for maintaining skin hydration during the winter months?

I don’t recommend slugging, which is a popular social media trend. But, I do think it’s beneficial to switch to a cream instead of lotion if you need more hydration in the winter months.

As a general rule of thumb, daytime skincare should be protective (think: antioxidants to protect from environmental damage, and SPF to protect against sun damage- even in the winter months). Nighttime skincare should be corrective (think: deep hydration from moisturizers and corrective/anti-aging serums like retinol)
